A consultant is someone who provides advice in a particular area of expertise. Once someone has experience working in public relations, he or she can become a PR consultant. If a person has been working in the PR field for many years and has a great reputation, then it will be easier to attract clients to the consulting business. A consultant either works for a consultancy firm or is self-employed. The reason most companies would hire a PR consultant is because they do not have the abilities to do the job, and do not have a strong network within the media. The majority of the clients a PR consultant should expect to have are from small companies and newer companies, although some major companies would seek consultants in a crisis or potential crisis situation.
There are several reasons why someone would want to become a consultant in public relations. One of the main reasons is that most PR Consultants make around $85,000 or more per year according to the Council of Public Relations. Self-employed consultants make anywhere from $50 an hour for planning or promoting special events, to $200 per hour to consult with business executives.
Public relations consultants must protect their clients’ reputations while helping them to achieve their business objectives. Some of the reasons that a company would hire a PR consultant include creating, implementing and measuring strategic communication plans in support of the organization’s vision, mission, values and priorities; attracting people to events; persuading people to buy new products; seeking organizations for donations; promoting a politician to gain votes; crisis and reputation management; seeking investors for a company; improving a company’s public image; lobbying the government to change or introduce a new law.
I believe that PR Consulting will only continue to grow in the US and Canada and possibly even worldwide. Organizations by and large wish to project as good an image as they can, and often wish to communicate a particular message. Organizations recognize that effective communications creates awareness and support among their constituents for its products, services, management views, intellectual capital and its distinct approach to doing business. It helps build credibility, manage risk, establish reputations and drive sales. From the receptionist to the CEO, everyone carries a message that has an impact on reputation.
